Figure Drawing for November 26, 2009

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

In honor of Thanksgiving, here is a portrait I painted of my boss, the Wife, from a photograph.  It's probably one of the best paintings I've done so far (the picture seems a little dark and doesn't really capture all the shading, etc.).  And I don't think I did too badly on the the Boss part, either--I married WAAAYYYYYY above my station.  :-)

As mushy as it all sounds, I am very thankful for my wife, two daughters, the rest of my extended family, friends, and almost everything else.  Huzzah!  :-)

The painting took about 3 hours and is approximately 7" x 14".  It is black-and-white, water-miscible oil paint on gessoed hard board.

Figure Drawing for November 21, 2009

30 Minute Pose

This one didn't turn out quite right.  There was some extreme foreshortening, which I botched up but good.  From the pelvis up, I think it looks OK, and the pelvis down looks OK, but together it is just all wrong, methinks.  I guess they can't all be winners.

Oh, well.  Live and learn.  Well, live, anyways.

This was done with charcoal, carbon pencil, and white charcoal, on 12" x 18" gray bogus paper.  (See?  No "Bogus, man!" comment this time.  I'm getting marginally better.)

This was done with charcoal, carbon pencil, and white charcoal on gray bogus (Bogus, man!) paper.  It measures about 12" x 12".

30 Minute Pose

The following pose was rather contorted and drawn from a slightly odd angle, hence it looks a little... weird and abstracted.

This was done with charcoal, carbon pencil, and white charcoal on 12" x 18" gray bogus (Bogus, man!--and, yes, I'll pro'lly do that joke almost EVERY time I mention bogus paper).

Figure Drawing for November 11, 2009

15 Minute Pose

Boring history: I had several sheets of illustration board which I was going to cut down to 8" x 10" and do some paintings with them.  Unfortunately, when the printer cut them, they were closer to 7" x 10" and they wouldn't fit into a 8" x 10" picture frame, as planned.  Rats!  The boards sat on the shelf for nearly a decade--too oddly-sized for my needs--before I dusted 'em off, gessoed 'em up, and thought to use them to do painting studies.  Turns out they were useful after all.  The Island of Misfit Painting Supports, I suppose...

This painting is a little impressionistic.  But, if you squint just right, you may be able to see a figure somewhere in those mass of brush strokes.

This was done with black and white acrylic paint on an approximate 7" x 10" gessoed illustration board.

Figure Drawing for November 6, 2009

2 Minute Pose

Greetings!  Well, between the reformatting of my computer taking a little longer than expected (which it always seems to do, for some reason--just once, can't everything go as planned?) and my getting ready for work have both conspired to make my postings a little later for Thursday's post, I'll balance that by making my Friday post earlier.  Karma, baby!

Both drawings are just warm-ups, which usually take about 2 minutes.  They were each done on 8-1/2" x. 11", black cardstock with white charcoal pencil.  Although the pictures make it look like it was done with some sort of neon blue pencil or something... which makes the pictures look much cooler than they really are.  Sigh...

This was done with watercolor on 11" x 15" Waterford (#140) watercolor paper.

Halloween... or should I say Helloween?

This year, my Boss (the Wife) suggested doing up a Castle for a Halloween decoration for the yard.  Um, OK...

4 sheets of 4' x 8' plywood bolted together and in the process of being painted out in our garage.  The castle's size is about 16' wide x 8-1/2' tall.

Smiling for the camera... Now, GET BACK TO PAINTING so I can get this darn thing out before Halloween is done.

And here it is in the yard with a couple weeks to spare...  (NOTE: I didn't make the werewolf or witch.)

I also decided to do up some 2' wide x 3' tall Tombstones (What do you want on your Tombstone? :-) for myself, my wife, and a friend just for fun.  At first, it was just gonna be a fake Victorian portrait on the Tombstone, but we all decided to go with a Zombie portrait, instead.

Here's mine--it's OK, but it looks like bit like an angry Harry Potter to me.  The missing part of the scalp could even be said to resemble (unintentionally) the lightening bolt scar.  Sigh.

Thank goodness I changed the style of my glasses about 15 years back, which were round at the time... otherwise it would have been kinda sad--as if I were some sort of middle-age Harry Potter wannabe.  Again, sigh...

Here is a portrait of the boss-lady.  I'm mostly happy with this one but, of course, it can **ALWAYS** be much better.  Someday, with practice...

This one also turned out mostly alright.  The portrait part turned out not too bad, but the collar and tie on the shirt look a little rumpled.  It reminds me vaguely of Rodney Dangerfield.  Oh, well...  Again, if they are to to be outside before Halloween, I suppose they'll have to be done for now.  :-)
