Figure Drawing for May 31, 2010

40 Minute Pose

Happy Memorial Day!

It's the officially unofficial official start of Summer!

Hooray!  I've been posting daily for about 6 weeks!  That said, I think I'll be slowing down with the posts for a while--only posting two or three times a week, give-or-take.  We'll see.  I'm hoping to start doing some larger projects, which I may be posting in an all-new blog.  Or something.  Again, we'll see...  :-)

This was done with ball-point pen on 9" x 12" Canson 100# Bristol Board.

Figure Drawing for May 30, 2010

5 Minute Pose

It's time for yet another figure drawing!  This one's a bit different from my usual pictures.  The picture was originally charcoal on white paper, but it didn't shoot well at all.  In adjusting the Levels in PhotoShop, I got this instead.  I sorta like the effect, though, and thought I'd post it.

This was done with charcoal and charcoal pencil on 9" x 12" Strathmore 70# drawing paper.  The colors were adjusted in PhotoShop.

Figure Drawing for May 28, 2010

40 Minute Pose

This is from the same session as the previous post.  While the painting itself is OK, this didn't turn out nearly as well as I would have wished (the face is a little off).  And, once again, just as I started to get my brain wrapped around solving the problem of painting the translucent cloth, the pose was finished.  If only I had another 10-15 minutes to work on this pose.  Sigh...

This was done with watercolor on 11" x 15" Arches 140# Hot Press paper.

Figure Drawing for May 27, 2010

30 Minute Pose

It's another figure drawing!  During this session, the model was draped with a semi-transparent, light-blue material.  It was an interesting effect and a bit tricky try and paint.  It requires lifting with some different art muscles, if you will.  Unfortunately, I was just getting to the point where I was starting to "get" how to get the cloth to look see-through in areas when time was called on the pose.  Oh, well...

This was done in watercolor on 9" x 12" Canson 100# Bristol Board.

Here's another figure drawing from the same session as yesterday's posting.

Figure Drawing for May 19, 2010

5 Minute Pose

Keeping the streak alive!  I guess I'll be keeping up the daily postings 'til the end of the month, I suppose.  After that, I'll pro'lly be posting about 2-3 times a week, again.  Anyways, on with the show...

This next series was done with a red light and blue light on opposite sides of the model to play with the lighting (the instructor was influenced by Shepard Fairey--who designed the Obama "Hope" poster).  It gives an interesting effect to draw.

This was done with pastel pencil on 8-1/2" x 11" black cardstock.

Once again, the black paper just doesn't shoot quite right for the camera, but this batch wasn't too bad.

Figure Drawing for May 18th, 2010

Hey, it's another drawing!

In honor of my boss, the wife, having a birthday today, here's a drawing based on a photo I snapped a few years ago, which I found cute.  It was around Easter and we had a pair of bunny ears laying about.  I had her put 'em on and give me a faux frownie-face mixed with a smirk.

Happy Birthday, Baby!

This was done in about 2 hours and is charcoal, carbon pencil, white chalk and white acrylic paint on 7" x 10" gessoed illustration board.

The background was painted with various gray tones which I worked over with charcoal and carbon pencil, along with white chalk for the highlights, as well as white acrylic paint.  Overall, I think it turned out pretty well.

And don't even THINK about asking her how old she is...  ;-)

========

ADDENDUM:

As an added bonus, I usually create my own birthday cards when I have the time, so I thought I would include the one I created this time around.  I may post others in the future, just for fun... we'll see.

Inside:

I cut out all the mushy stuff below the fold, if you will, so people don't throw-up in their mouths while reading this.  :-)

This was done in about 90 minutes, give or take.  It is watercolor and ball-point pen done on fawn-colored Stonehenge paper, with Chinese White watercolor for the highlights.  It measures about 4-1/2" x 11" and is folded to make a card which measures 4-1/2" x 5" finished card.  The word bubble was printed out on my laser printer on normal copy paper, cut out, and glued onto the card with rubber cement.  The interior lettering is just my crappy handwriting/printing with a ballpoint pen and Sharpie marker for the extra-bold portion.

Most of the time my birthday cards are a bit more snarky, but this time I guess I decided to cut the boss a break.  ;-)

Figure Drawing for May 17, 2010

Hey, It's my 100th Post!

And they said it would never last.  Although, to be fair, I'm sure they were really HOPING it wouldn't last and asking WHY it is lasting this long and WHY don't I stop inflicting these drawings on everyone?  Pure sadism on my part would be the guess...

With apologies to Edvard Munch, this vague caricature of myself was done in about 2 hours.  It took about one hour for the black-and-white drawing with charcoal, carbon pencil, and white chalk on 9" x 12" gray bogus paper.  It was then imported into PhotoShop and colorized, which took another hour or so.

Just for fun, here's the original picture which I shot with a camera on the easel.  Although, now that I look at it, I almost think I like the original black-and-white picture better.  Sigh...

If you look in the background, you can see one of the references I used (again, sorry Edvard!), as well as a sneak peak at tomorrow's picture, too.  :-)

Hey, I've been posting daily for two weeks, now.  And, now that I noticed the "Post Option" to schedule postings in the future, I think I'll keep posting daily for a while (I'm a little slow sometimes).  Well, probably for the month of May.  We'll see how it goes after that.  No promises... :-)
